Homeschooling portfolios are used to document a student's educational activities for the county school board. But portfolios have a much more valuable use : they can be used as a presentation package for college application and future employment. If you arrange the highlights of a homeschooling portfolio into a presentation package, it becomes a powerful means of communicating who a person is and what they can do. For example, in the art and design fields, it is the traditional way that people introduce themselves. After twelve years of public or private school education, what does a student have to show for it? A transcript? Or maybe some bland, uninspired reports or projects that were given as assignments. Is there any work done that the student wasn't told to do? Anything that expresses the student's genuine interests and initiative? ... No wonder high schools have to offer classes on how to write good college admissions essays.
The problem is that schools have it backwards. For twelve years, they
coerce students into doing assignments by rewarding and punishing with
grades. Then, they try to help students look like fascinating,
inspired, self-directed people in their admissions essays.
